Information & registration

Good education is not just about imparting knowledge and skills, it enables young people to develop themselves as whole human beings. Bildung provides them with the attitudes and competencies to consciously and actively relate to themselves, each other and the world - to make a positive social contribution with that starting point. In doing so, they learn to give direction and meaning to their own lives and to cooperate across social, cultural and disciplinary boundaries. This requires education that goes beyond traditional teaching methods and analytical thinking. The role of the teacher is crucial in this and is only becoming more important.

‍Whatdoes Bildung mean in this day and age? How do you make Bildung concrete in everyday teaching? And what must be present in a school organization to really make Bildung a reality?

In this course you will work with these questions under the guidance of The Bildung Academy. Using interactive methods and with experts in the fields of art, entrepreneurship, coaching and philosophy, you will give Bildung a place in your lessons. We examine what Bildung means for you as a teacher and how you can get started with it. Even in a busy daily practice and amidst organizational obstacles.

This way we make sure that after these meetings we not only consider Bildung important, but also make it important.

For whom?

Teachers and lecturers in secondary education, vocational education, higher vocational education and higher education, who have the desire to put a greater focus on personal development and social responsibility in their personal and professional lives.

programme structure

In this course, you and other passionate teachers will explore what Bildung means to you as a teacher and how to make it concrete within your teaching. We focus on four dimensions:

Bildung as a contemporary ideal

What is the origin of the bildung ideal? What is the meaning of Bildung in this day and age? And why is it perhaps more important now than ever? This dimension is about developing and being able to articulate one's own vision of Bildung as a crucial part of contemporary education. We explore the relationship between Bildung and current educational terms such as citizenship, student welfare and 21st century skills along with pressing challenges such as polarization and digitization in the classroom.

Bildung as an educational practice

Bildung requires new education. This dimension focuses on the translation of Bildung as an ideal into everyday teaching. How do you guide young people in developing their empathic, expressive, ethical and creative abilities? How do you inspire and motivate your students? You get acquainted with important didactic and pedagogical principles of bildung, learn practical examples and connect knowledge and experience from for example art, business, sports, science and coaching with your teaching practice. You experiment within your own lessons with your personal learning questions and newly acquired insights; learning by doing.

Bildung as an organizational principle

Bildung benefits most from an integral approach, not something that takes place within one separate subject or a small working group. This dimension deals with the question of what must be present within an educational organization to make Bildung a reality. What does Bildung require from principals and colleagues? What practical and formal conditions must be met to make Bildung a living practice? What opportunities do you see within your institution? These questions are not only about your role as a professional teacher, but also as a colleague, employee and change agent.

Your own Bildung

Who or what shaped you into the teacher you are today? What is your original motivation for going into teaching? Where are the boundaries of your comfort zone and how often do you dare to go beyond them in your teaching? The motto for Bildung is: practice what you preach. This dimension therefore focuses on your values, talents, qualities and pitfalls. Your own Bildung. You examine your formation as a teacher and determine what goals you want to set for yourself after the course.

Education does not touch the essence. Efficiency gives too little depth, a mass lecture too little connection. Is this really what it is? There must be more to it than we are getting out of it now.

In 2014, a group of students and teachers from across the country created an urgency to not keep walking around with this feeling, but to do something about it. A bottom-up initiative by people with the will to bring about positive change within the education system. In response to the great desire for more space within education for the development of people, they saw the answer in Bildung: actively, consciously and ethically relating to your inner self, the other and the world.

In our ideal world, we put as many people as possible in touch with themselves and in connection with others in order to tackle personal and social challenges as a collective. That is why we are building the university of the 21st century. We do this together with The Bildung Network, which consists of new generations of students and (young) professionals, teachers, artists, scientists and organizations within the public sector, education and B Corps.
